Socrates - Man and Philosopher £3.00

This short work examines the life and work of one of the greatest philosophers of all time. Socrates and Jesus Christ shared some common characteristics: both of them wrote absolutely nothing yet their names are known everywhere in the world. They differed in the "socio-economic" standing of their pupils. Socrates had wealthy young men as his students and Jesus had poor fishermen as his disciples. What we know about both of them is through writings of their pupils or followers. Socrates was condemned to death in 399 BC by his fellow Athenians who accused him of corrupting the young with his ideas. In fact there were political motives behind his sentence. Athens had just lost the war against Sparta (Peloponnesian War 431 - 404 BC) and part of the blame went on Socrates for being the teacher of the "treacherous" Alcibiades who betrayed the Athenians at the Sicilian expedition.
