PRELIMINARY CERTIFICATE
The aim of this examination is to test candidates in four basic skills: 1. Listening, 2. Reading, 3. Speaking and 4. Writing. The examination is suitable for people who complete one year's study of Modern Greek at School, College, Adult Education Centre, University or Private study. The oral part of the examination is carried out by the Local Teacher. The standard of this examination is the same as the Basic Level of the GCSE.
The Examination will consist of the following four papers:
Paper 1. Oral (About 10 - 15 minutes).
(A) Prepared Talk. The candidate must select two topics from the following list and talk to the Examiner for 2 minutes on each topic. The topics for the year 2010 are:
1. My Family 2. My friends 3. My Holidays 4. My home 5. My town / village 6. My school / work 7. A visit 8. Easter/ Christmas 9. My favouriteT.V. Programme 10. What I do at week-ends.
(B) Conversation. To talk to the Examiner for about five minutes on simple topics, e.g. ordering a meal at a restaurant, booking rooms at a hotel, likes and dislikes, shopping, holidays, visiting friends or places
Paper 2. Listening and Responding (40 Minutes).
Candidates will listen to a number of simple statements in Greek. Each statement will be read twice and immediately afterwards candidates will respond to the questions indicating whether the statements are true or false or give short answers in Greek. They will have 30 seconds for each answer.
Paper 3. Reading and Responding (40 Minutes).
Candidates will read a number of simple statements in Greek and will respond to the questions indicating whether the statements they have read are true or false or give short answers in Greek.
Paper 4. Basic Writing (40 Minutes).
Candidates will have a choice of either writing a letter or a short essay in Greek of about 100 words.
Examination Assessment: Each Paper carries 40 Marks. Candidates must score at least 80 marks (out of 160) in order to pass. There are three Grades of Pass: Grade A = 131 - 160, Grade B = 101 - 130 Grade C = 80 - 100.
