INTERMEDIATE CERTIFICATE
The aim of this examination is to test candidates in four skills at Intermediate Level: 1. Listening, 2. Speaking, 3. Reading and 4. Writing. The examination is suitable for people who complete two years of study of Modern Greek. The oral part of the examination is carried out by the Local teacher. The standard of this examination is similar to the Higher level of the GCSE examination.
The Examination will consist of the following four papers:
Paper 1. Oral (About 15- 20 Minutes)
(A) Prepared Talk. The candidate must select two topics from the following list and talk to the examiner for 3 minutes on each topic. The topics for the year 2010 are:
1. A visit to Greece or Cyprus 2. The Greek Church 3. A Greek Custom 4. A Wedding 5. My plans for the future 6. Greek Literature (Any book you have read) 7. Life in a town or village 8. My childhood 9. My relatives 10. An important event in my life.
(B) Conversation. To talk to the examiner for about 6 - 8 minutes on general topics, e.g. your work / studies, holidays, interests, visits to friends/places, books, films, etc.
Paper 2. Listening and Responding (50 Minutes)
Candidates will listen to a number of statements in Greek. Each statement will be read twice and candidates will be given 30 seconds to respond to the questions (true or false) or write short answers in Greek.
Paper 3. Reading and Responding (50 Minutes).
Candidates will read a number of statements in Greek and will respond to the questions (true or false) or write short answers in Greek.
Paper 4. Greek Essay (50 Minutes).
Candidates will write an essay in Greek (150 -200 words) on a general topic.
Examination Assessment: Each Paper carries 40 Marks. Candidates must score at least 80 marks (out of 160) in order to pass. There are three Grades of Pass: Grade A = 131 - 160, Grade B = 101 - 130 and Grade C = 80 - 100.
