| A History Of Cyprus | £10.00 |
This History of Cyprus examines in an impartial way the past and recent present of this tragic island. Although this History starts from the ancient times the emphasis is on the last 120 years, i.e. from the British rule (1878 - 1960) to the present. The author, a Cypriot himself, apportions blame not only to outsiders but also to the nationalist leadership of both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. His view is that the struggle for Enosis in 1955 led by the nationalists Makarios and Grivas and the struggle for Taxim (Partition) led by Kutchuk and Denktash divided instead of uniting the Cypriot people. When both sides compromised and accepted Independence in 1959 they did not make any effort to co-operate and to co-exist in order to build a new common homeland but both sides remained "victim" and "hostage" to their nationalist ambitions and aspirations. The role of the three Guarantors (Britain, Greece and Turkey) was equally treacherous in that they all contributed in 1974 to bring about the Greek military coup, the Turkish invasion, the displacement of 200,000 people and the tragic divison of this island.
