DIPLOMA IN GREEK TRANSLATION
The aim of this examination is to test candidates' ability to translate either from Greek into English or from English into Greek at a professional standard, i.e. at University Degree level. Candidates translate only into their mother tongue. The standard of this examination is about the same as a First University Degree. Candidates must pass in all papers in order to qualify for the Diploma. The Diploma is a useful qualification to all those who are interested to work as professional translators and interpreters, or in other professions where Translation and Interpreting constitute a major part.
There will be THREE Papers of 3 hours each. The use of Dictionaries is allowed.
Paper 1. General Translation (3 hours)
To translate two passages into the mother tongue (each passage about 750 words). The passages will be of a demanding but non-specialised nature. The text of the passages will relate to any of these subjects: Current affairs, Politics, Tourism, History, Literature, the European Union or the Economy.
Paper 2. Specialised Translation (3 hours)
To translate two passages into the mother tongue (each passage about 750 words). The text of the passages will relate to any of these subjects: Humanities, Business Studies, Law, Education, Travel and Tourism or Social Sciences.
Paper 3. Specialised Translation (3 hours)
To translate two passages into the mother tongue (each passage about 750 words). The passages will relate to any of these subjects: Science, Technology, Commerce, Computer Science, Hotel & Catering Management or Medicine.
Examination Assessment: Each Paper carries 100 marks. In order to qualify for the Diploma candidates must pass in all three papers. There are three Grades of Pass: First Class (Distinction), Second Class (Very Good), Third Class (Pass).
Professional Designation : Successful candidates in the Diploma may use the designation Dip.Gr.Tran.(GI) and may also be elected Fellows of the Institute and may append after their names the initials FGI, denoting Fellowship of the Greek Institute, so long as they remain Fellows.
