ADVANCED CERTIFICATE

 

The aim of this examination is to test candidates' ability to speak, read, write and understand the Greek language at an Advanced level. The examination is suitable for people who have either the Intermediate Certificate or the GCSE in Modern Greek. The standard of this examination is about the same as the GCE "A" level.

There will be two written papers of 3 hours each and an Oral Paper of 20 minutes. (Please note that books related to all the Papers and sections listed below are available from the Greek Institute. Please send a SAE for the current price list).

Paper 1. Language (3 hours)

(a) To translate one passage from Greek into English (about 250 words).

(b) To translate one passage from English into Greek (about 250 words).

(c ) To write one essay in Greek (250 - 300 words).

Books recommended for Paper 1: Modern Greek Translation £7.50. English-Greek Translation £7.50. Greek Essays £15.00. (Books available for the Greek Institute).

Paper 2. (3 hours)

 (A) Literature , (B) History (C) Geography & Tourism

Candidates must write THREE essays in Greek (about 250 - 300 words each): one from each section.

Section A: Modern Greek Literature (Prescribed texts for  2011)

Candidates must write an essay on the following book:

1. Costas Tachtsis: To Trito Stefani (£17.50)

This book is available from the Greek Institute. The price includes postage and packing.

Section B: Either History of Greece (1912 - 1981) Or History of Cyprus (1878 - 1993)

The paper will be divided into two parts and candidates may answer questions from either the History of Greece or the History of Cyprus. There will be two questions of the "Either - Or" type on Greece and on Cyprus. 

Topics to be studied for the History of Greece: (a) The Balkan Wars (b) The 1922 Asia Minor Disaster, (c ) The Metaxas Dictatorship (d) Greece and the 2nd World War (e) The Civil War (f) The Military Dictatorship (1967 - 74) (g) Restoration of Democracy and the first PASOK Government.

Topics to be studied for the History of Cyprus: (a) British rule from 1878 - 1931 (b) The 1931 Uprising  (c ) The political parties and trade unions (d) The Struggle for Enosis 1955-59 (e) The Zurich-London Agreements and Independence (f) The 1974 military coup and the Turkish invasion (g) Cyprus from 1974 to 1993.

Books recommended for this Section: Either A History of Modern Greece (in Greek) Or A History of Cyprus £15.00 each.

Section C: Geography & Tourism of Greece or Cyprus

The paper will be divided into two parts and candidates may answer questions from either on Greece or Cyprus. There will be two questions of the "Either - Or" type on Greece and on Cyprus. 

Regions to be studied for Greece:

(a) Macedonia

(b) The Ionian Islands

(c) The Aegean Islands

(d) Attica

For the section on Cyprus all regions must be studied.

Paper 3. Oral Test (20 Minutes) Conversation with the Examiner on current affairs and general topics to test the candidate's fluency.
